We had a 1985 Honda ATC70 donated to the project crew. So a new and differant home had to happen for the tired old ATC70 heart. So why not a quarter scale monster truck? With a '41 Willys Pickup body from Heritage A & F Ltd. Most of the build ideas came from the builder of the Sampson Monster Trucks Dan Patrick.
The rear suspension is a typical four link with a diagonal link and anti roll to keep the rear sprocket square in the chassis. The front suspension is a triangulated four link. The rod ends, adapters, and tubing, are from Applied Racing Technology. The rear and front shocks are from 125 dirt bikes purchased at Land's Cycles and have 3 1/2" of travel.
The steering was quite a challenge. But I think we have a handle on it or at least soon some handle bars. Tried to use the Old Ford 4X4 type of steereing setup. But the bump steer would have put me on my butt. So back to the drawing board in the brain. Picture 16 will show you what the brain thaught up. Amazinly it works.
Mounted the gas tank from American Power Sports. Put a new plug and plug wire on it and fired it up. Well it seams the motor is a little tired. But it ran good enought to try it out in the yard. Seems the suspension is going to work well. But the motor is going to get a rebuild.
While the motor is on the operating table the chassis is going to get a coat of Baron Red Powder by Southwest Impreglon.
Well the chassis is back from the powder coater (and looks awsome) and the motor is in. We got our hands on some aluminum 8" X 8" / 3" BS wheels. The 18" X 9.50" X 8" "narley" lug tires will be here tuesday. Got the motor fired but it still don't want to run without the choke closed all the time. Humm I think we are going to have to hunt up another carb. Kiting the old one wasn't the answer.
Got a loner carb, think we will make it through the parade on the 4th. But still down on HP. Mounted up the new tires and wheels. That was the finishing touch it needed. Now it looks like a MONSTER TRUCK.
The project MONSTER TRUCK was a hit at the Baytown 4th of July Parade. Made it through without a hitch. The motor is still sick. Got my eyes on a 110cc electric start motor to replace the tired 70cc motor Power Bike USA.
With the bigger tires we felt a gear change was in need. Changing from a 13 tooth front sproket to a 12 tooth and 36 tooth rear to a 44 tooth. Sprokets are on order from Classic Honda.
Ronnie Fehring of John's Trim Shop, Baytown, TX caught out on a joy ride. Well, he gets all the joy rides he wants. Ronnie donated the tires and wheels to the project. Thanks Ronnie, TK, and Chris.
New motor rocks. Totes the front wheels in second gear. But down shifting the chain skips on the motor sprocket. But as luck would have I found a chain tensioner on Ebay the was the fix for that. Now it will down shift with no problem.
TK brought over a radar gun and on a straight streach of road of about 1/4 mile top speed was recorded at 33mph. Fast enough with my butt 48" off the ground.
More updates will be posted as they happen.
